THE BELIZE GUIDE

Emergencies In Belize

What to do when something goes seriously wrong.

๐Ÿšจ Hopefully You Never Need This Page

Most trips to Belize are filled with beaches, jungle, reef, rivers, caves, good food and new adventures. But travelling also means occasionally finding yourself somewhere unfamiliar when something goes wrong.

You could be injured on a jungle trail, become seriously ill on an island, have an accident on the road, get caught in a tropical storm, need help on the water, or find yourself in a situation where another traveller needs urgent assistance.

This page is designed for travellers. It brings together the most important emergency numbers, medical information, maritime contacts, hurricane advice, and practical things to know before you need them.

Save the numbers you may need before you travel. In an emergency, you do not want to be searching through old blog posts while trying to remember which number is current.

๐Ÿ“ž 911 Police & General Emergency
๐Ÿ”ฅ 990 Fire Emergency
๐ŸŒช๏ธ 936 NEMO National Emergencies

๐Ÿ“ฑ The Numbers To Save Now

For most travellers, the most important number to remember is 911. It is the main emergency number for police assistance and emergency response.

Belize also has dedicated emergency short codes for fire, maritime emergencies, and the Belize Coast Guard.

  • ๐Ÿšจ 911 โ€” Police / Emergency Assistance
  • ๐Ÿ”ฅ 990 โ€” Fire Emergency
  • ๐ŸŒช๏ธ 936 โ€” NEMO / National Emergency Management Organisation
  • ๐ŸŒŠ 966 โ€” National Marine Communications Centre
  • โš“ 999 โ€” Belize Coast Guard Emergency
  • ๐Ÿ“ป VHF Channel 16 โ€” Maritime Emergency Communications
Traveller Tip:

Save these numbers in your phone before you arrive. If you are travelling on a foreign SIM, eSIM or through a service that relies on internet calling, do not assume that every emergency number will work in exactly the same way as it does at home. Ask your accommodation, tour operator or local provider if you are unsure.

๐Ÿง  What To Do First In An Emergency

The first thing is to stay as calm as possible.

If somebody is seriously injured, there is an immediate threat to life, or emergency assistance is required, call 911.

Do not put yourself or other people in danger trying to help. If you are able to assist safely, do what you can while following instructions from emergency responders.

When you call, try to explain clearly:

  • Exactly where you are.
  • What has happened.
  • How many people need help.
  • Whether anybody is seriously injured.
  • Whether there is an immediate danger.
  • How emergency responders can find you.

The location is especially important in Belize. You may not be standing beside a clearly marked street address. You could be on a beach, in the jungle, on a river, inside a cave, on a remote road, at a small guesthouse, on a caye, or out on a boat.

Before travelling anywhere remote:

Know the name of your accommodation, the nearest town, the name of your tour or boat operator, and the general area where you are going. These details can make it much easier to explain your location if something goes wrong.

๐Ÿ  GO IN. STAY IN. TUNE IN.

If you are not directly involved in an accident but are nearby, or you believe you may be in danger, one of the most important things you can do is avoid becoming another person who needs rescuing.

Get inside somewhere safe if appropriate. Stay there. Follow official information and instructions from emergency services and local authorities.

During a major emergency, rely on official information rather than rumours, forwarded messages or old social media posts.

๐Ÿ“ป Follow Official Information

During hurricanes, flooding and other national emergencies, follow information from NEMO, official government channels, weather services, radio and other trusted official sources.

๐Ÿฅ Medical Emergencies In Belize

For a serious medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital or medical facility.

Belize has public and private healthcare facilities, but the level of medical care and the time it takes to reach a hospital can vary considerably depending on where you are.

Belize City has the country’s main referral facilities and the greatest concentration of advanced medical services. Outside Belize City, district hospitals, clinics and private medical providers serve local communities and travellers.

If you are travelling in a remote area, on a caye, in the jungle or far from a major town, you may be a considerable distance from the medical care you would need for a serious accident or complex illness.

An everyday illness or minor injury may be treated locally. A serious trauma, major accident, severe infection, complicated illness or other emergency may require transfer to a larger facility.

๐Ÿš‘ Ambulances & Response Times

Emergency response and ambulance availability can vary significantly by location. Urban areas and larger population centres generally have greater access to emergency services than remote communities, islands and rural areas.

Do not assume that an ambulance will arrive as quickly as it might in your home country. If you are travelling far from a major town, consider how you would reach medical care if roads, boats or flights were affected by weather or other circumstances.

๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Travel Insurance Is More Important Than Many Travellers Think

Travel insurance is not just for cancelled flights or lost luggage.

If you are travelling to Belize, particularly if you are diving, snorkelling, hiking, caving, travelling by boat, riding a motorcycle, exploring remote areas or taking part in adventure activities, check exactly what your insurance covers.

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Hospital treatment
  • Ambulance transportation
  • Medical evacuation
  • Air evacuation where necessary
  • Adventure activities you plan to undertake
  • Scuba diving and depth limits
  • Emergency repatriation

A serious medical evacuation can cost a substantial amount of money. The most appropriate treatment may not always be available where you are staying, and serious cases may require transfer to Belize City or international evacuation depending on the circumstances.

Before you travel:

Read the actual policy wording. Do not assume that a policy covers diving, caving, motorbike travel, remote-area rescue or medical evacuation simply because it says it includes emergency medical care.

๐Ÿ“ Finding Medical Help Around Belize

The medical facility closest to you will depend on where you are travelling. The following areas are particularly important for travellers.

๐Ÿ™๏ธ Belize City

Belize City has the country’s main referral facilities and the broadest range of medical services. Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is the national referral hospital, while private hospitals and medical providers also operate in the city.

For serious or complex emergencies, Belize City is an important referral destination for patients from other parts of the country.

๐ŸŒด Placencia & The Stann Creek Coast

Placencia and the surrounding coastal area have local medical services for everyday medical needs and urgent situations. A new or upgraded local medical facility may be available depending on the current services operating in the area.

For serious or complex emergencies, patients may need to be transferred to a larger hospital or referral facility. Travellers staying on the peninsula should ask their accommodation or tour operator where the nearest current emergency medical facility is located.

๐ŸŒฟ San Ignacio & Western Belize

San Ignacio and the wider Cayo District are important bases for travellers exploring caves, rivers, jungle areas and archaeological sites.

Local medical facilities are available, while more serious cases may require referral or transfer to a larger facility depending on the condition.

๐Ÿฅ Belmopan

Belmopan is home to medical facilities serving the central and western regions. Travellers moving between Belize City, San Ignacio and western Belize should know where the nearest hospital or emergency facility is located.

๐ŸŒŠ Dangriga & Southern Belize

Dangriga is an important medical centre for the southern region and is home to the Southern Regional Hospital.

Travellers heading further south should remember that distances become greater, particularly when travelling towards remote areas.

๐Ÿ๏ธ San Pedro & Ambergris Caye

San Pedro has local medical services and is one of the most important medical centres for travellers visiting Ambergris Caye.

The island also has access to hyperbaric treatment for diving-related emergencies. Divers should always confirm current arrangements and emergency procedures with their dive operator before entering the water.

๐ŸŒด Caye Caulker & The Smaller Cayes

Smaller islands may have local medical services but do not offer the same level of medical care as Belize City or larger population centres.

If you are staying on a smaller caye, ask your accommodation what the current procedure is for a serious medical emergency and how patients are transferred to larger medical facilities.

๐ŸŒณ Punta Gorda & Toledo

Punta Gorda serves as an important medical centre for southern Belize.

Travellers exploring remote parts of Toledo should plan ahead. A serious medical emergency may involve considerable travel time and transfer arrangements.

๐ŸŒŠ If You Are On The Water

Belize is surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and includes islands, reefs, rivers, lagoons and remote coastal areas.

If you are travelling by boat, diving, snorkelling, fishing, sailing or taking a water taxi, know how to raise the alarm before you leave.

  • ๐Ÿ“ž 966 โ€” National Marine Communications Centre
  • ๐Ÿ“ž 999 โ€” Belize Coast Guard Emergency
  • ๐Ÿ“ป VHF Channel 16 โ€” Maritime Emergency Communications

The Belize Coast Guard is a key emergency responder for incidents at sea. If you are on a boat or taking a marine tour, listen carefully to the safety briefing and make sure you know which vessel and operator you are travelling with.

If something goes wrong, the location of the vessel, the number of people involved and the ability to communicate that information can be critical.

๐Ÿคฟ Diving Emergencies

Belize is one of the world’s great diving destinations, but diving emergencies can become serious very quickly.

If you suspect decompression sickness or another serious diving-related emergency, seek immediate medical assistance and inform your dive operator.

A hyperbaric chamber is available in San Pedro for diving-related emergencies. Your dive operator should have emergency procedures and know how to arrange assistance.

โš ๏ธ Before You Dive

  • Check what your insurance covers.
  • Ask whether diving and the planned depth are covered.
  • Know what emergency procedures your dive operator follows.
  • Know how to contact help if you are on a remote dive site.
  • Consider specialist dive insurance if your normal travel insurance is limited.
Do not wait if you suspect a serious diving emergency.

Tell your dive operator immediately and seek professional medical assistance. Do not attempt to simply continue your holiday and hope serious symptoms disappear.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Fire Emergencies

For a fire emergency, call 990.

If you are staying in a hostel, hotel, guesthouse, apartment or other accommodation, take a moment when you arrive to notice the exits.

  • Know how to leave the building.
  • Do not use an elevator during a fire.
  • Follow the instructions of staff and emergency responders.
  • Do not re-enter a burning or damaged building.
  • Stay away from smoke and dangerous electrical wires.

If you are staying somewhere unfamiliar, knowing where the exit is before you need it takes only a few seconds.

๐Ÿ‘ฎ Police, Crime & Reporting An Incident

If you are in immediate danger or need urgent police assistance, call 911.

If you are the victim of theft, robbery, assault or another crime, report the incident to the police as soon as it is safe to do so.

If you need to make an insurance claim, ask for a police report or reference information. Your insurer may require official documentation.

๐Ÿ” Protect Your Important Documents

  • Keep your passport secure.
  • Keep a digital copy of important documents.
  • Keep emergency insurance information accessible.
  • Do not keep all your cash and cards in one place.
  • If your passport is stolen, contact your embassy or consulate.

๐Ÿ“ข Crime Stoppers

Crime Stoppers is for providing information about crime and is not a replacement for calling 911 when you are in immediate danger.

๐Ÿ†˜ If You Are Experiencing Abuse Or Violence

If you are in immediate danger, call 911.

Travellers who experience domestic violence, sexual assault, abuse or another serious threat should seek immediate safety and contact emergency services.

If you are travelling with somebody who is threatening or harming you, try to move to a safe location if you can do so without increasing the danger.

If a child is in immediate danger, contact emergency services. Belize also has a child abuse hotline listed as 0-800-PROTECT.

The Domestic Violence Unit is associated with the 0-800-A WAY OUT hotline. Always verify current availability and operating arrangements if you need non-emergency support.

If you are a traveller and need help:

Your accommodation, tour operator, embassy or consulate may also be able to help you reach appropriate local support after you are safe.

๐Ÿง  Mental Health Emergencies

A mental health crisis is also an emergency when somebody is at immediate risk of harming themselves or another person.

If there is an immediate danger, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency medical facility.

Travellers should not assume that Belize has the same dedicated national crisis-line system that exists in some other countries.

If you are travelling with somebody experiencing a serious mental health crisis, do not leave them alone if doing so would create an immediate danger. Move away from weapons or other dangerous objects where possible and seek professional emergency assistance.

๐ŸŒช๏ธ Hurricanes, Tropical Storms & Flooding

Belize is exposed to tropical storms and hurricanes, particularly during the Atlantic hurricane season.

The National Emergency Management Organisation โ€” NEMO โ€” is responsible for national disaster management and can be contacted on 936.

If you are travelling during hurricane season, weather conditions can change quickly. Keep checking official forecasts and follow official instructions.

This is particularly important if you are staying on a caye, beach, low-lying coastal area or another location vulnerable to storm surge and flooding.

๐Ÿšจ If An Evacuation Is Ordered

  • Leave early if instructed to evacuate.
  • Do not wait until roads are flooded.
  • Do not wait until boats or planes stop operating.
  • Follow official evacuation instructions.
  • Take your passport and essential documents.
  • Take essential medication.
  • Keep your phone charged.
  • Follow the instructions of your accommodation and local authorities.

๐Ÿ  Hurricane Safety For Travellers

  • Stay tuned to official weather and NEMO updates.
  • Follow official evacuation instructions.
  • Leave vulnerable islands and coastal areas early if advised.
  • Do not attempt to cross flooded roads.
  • Do not drive through floodwater if you cannot judge its depth or condition.
  • Bring loose outdoor items inside where possible.
  • Keep drinking water available.
  • Keep food that does not require refrigeration.
  • Keep flashlights and batteries available.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged.
  • Keep a power bank charged.
  • Keep passports and important documents somewhere waterproof.
  • Stay away from loose electrical wires.
  • Do not enter damaged buildings.
  • Do not assume that a temporary lull means the danger has passed.
Remember:

The quiet period during the eye of a hurricane can be temporary. Dangerous conditions can return suddenly.

๐ŸŒฟ Travelling Into Remote Areas

Some of the best experiences in Belize involve going away from cities and large towns. Jungle hikes, caves, rivers, archaeological sites and remote beaches are part of the adventure.

The further you travel from major population centres, the more important it becomes to plan ahead.

  • Tell somebody where you are going.
  • Use a reputable guide or tour operator where appropriate.
  • Carry enough drinking water.
  • Take essential medication.
  • Carry a charged phone or communication device.
  • Know when you are expected to return.
  • Know the name of the area you are visiting.
  • Do not rely on mobile phone coverage existing everywhere.
  • Follow local safety instructions.

If you become lost or injured, knowing your planned route and destination can make it much easier for somebody to find you.

๐Ÿš— Road Accidents & Transport Emergencies

If you are involved in a road accident, move to a safe location if you can do so without worsening any injuries.

Call 911 if anybody is seriously injured or there is an immediate danger.

  • Do not put yourself in danger from traffic.
  • Do not move seriously injured people unless there is an immediate danger.
  • Call emergency services.
  • Give the exact location.
  • Contact the vehicle rental company or tour operator when safe.
  • Report the incident to the police where required.
  • Keep photographs and documentation for your insurer.

If you are travelling by bus, taxi, rental car, motorcycle or other vehicle, keep your accommodation details and emergency insurance information accessible.

๐ŸŽ’ A Traveller’s Emergency Kit

You do not need to travel around Belize carrying a giant disaster kit. But a few simple items can make a serious difference if you become stranded, injured or caught in bad weather.

  • ๐Ÿ’ง Drinking water
  • ๐Ÿซ Long-life food or snacks
  • ๐Ÿ”ฆ Flashlight
  • ๐Ÿ”‹ Spare batteries or power bank
  • ๐Ÿ“ฑ Charged mobile phone
  • ๐Ÿ’Š Essential medication
  • ๐Ÿฉน Basic first-aid supplies
  • ๐Ÿงฅ Rain gear and suitable clothing
  • ๐Ÿ›‚ Passport and identification
  • ๐Ÿ’ณ Cash and bank cards
  • ๐Ÿ“„ Travel insurance details
  • ๐Ÿ“ธ Digital copies of important documents
  • ๐Ÿ“ป Access to official weather information

โœ… A Few Things To Do Before Something Goes Wrong

  • Save 911 in your phone.
  • Save 990 for fire emergencies.
  • Save 936 for NEMO and national disaster information.
  • Save 966 for maritime emergencies.
  • Save 999 for Belize Coast Guard emergencies.
  • Know the name and location of your accommodation.
  • Know where the nearest hospital or medical facility is.
  • Save your travel insurance emergency assistance number.
  • Keep a copy of your passport and important documents.
  • Know how to contact your tour operator.
  • If you are travelling by boat, know the name of the vessel and operator.
  • If you are travelling into a remote area, tell somebody where you are going.
  • If you are travelling during hurricane season, know how you would leave your location if transport stopped operating.
  • If you are staying on an island, remember that bad weather can affect boats and flights.
Backpacker Tip:

Ask your hostel, hotel or guesthouse when you arrive: โ€œWhere is the nearest hospital or clinic, and what should I do if I have a serious emergency?โ€ It takes less than a minute and could be incredibly useful later.

๐ŸŒ If You Need Your Embassy Or Consulate

Your embassy or consulate cannot replace emergency services and will not normally pay your medical bills, hotel bills or travel costs.

However, consular staff may be able to help with situations such as:

  • Lost or stolen passports.
  • Serious hospitalisation.
  • Contacting family members.
  • Providing information about local medical facilities.
  • Explaining what consular assistance may be available.
  • Helping you understand procedures after a serious incident.

Before travelling, save the emergency contact details for your own embassy or consulate in Belize.

Do not wait until your passport disappears.

Save your embassy or consulate details before you travel and keep a digital copy of your passport somewhere secure.

A Little Preparation Goes A Long Way

Belize is an adventure destination.

You may hike through the jungle, explore caves, swim in rivers, dive the reef, travel by boat, ride unfamiliar roads, stay on a small island or find yourself a long way from the nearest hospital.

Hopefully you will never need to call an emergency number during your trip.

But knowing who to call, where to go and what to do next can make a frightening situation a little less frightening.

Save the numbers. Know where you are. Stay calm. And enjoy Belize. ๐ŸŒด๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ฟ

๐ŸŒฟ

“Adventure is knowing
when to be prepared.”

You may never need the emergency numbers, the first-aid kit, or the backup plan. But in Belize, a little preparation means you can spend more time enjoying the adventure โ€” and know exactly what to do if something unexpected happens.
