Can You Drink The Water In Belize?

What travellers should know before reaching for the tap.

πŸ’§ Yes… But It Depends Where You Are

One of the questions almost every traveller asks before visiting Belize is:

β€œCan I drink the tap water?”

The honest answer is that there is not one simple answer for the entire country.

In many towns and cities, treated municipal tap water is available and many people drink it. The Belize Tourism Board also states that tap water in cities and towns is treated and that tap water and ice are generally safe to consume.

But Belize is not just cities and towns.

Some places rely on wells, rainwater collection, tanks, private filtration systems or other local water sources.

So the best advice is simple:

Ask where you are staying before you start drinking straight from the tap.

🚰 Tap Water

Often treated in towns and cities, but local conditions and water sources can vary.

πŸ’§ Filtered Water

Widely available in hotels, hostels, restaurants and accommodation throughout Belize.

πŸ₯€ Bottled Water

Easy to find if you prefer bottled water or are unsure about the local supply.

🌴 The Honest Answer For Travellers

If you are staying in a town with a treated municipal water supply, you may find that drinking the tap water is perfectly normal.

There are people who have lived in Belize for years and drink water straight from the tap without a problem.

There are also places where visitors are advised to use filtered or bottled water instead.

That is why you should not automatically believe somebody who tells you that the water is either completely safe everywhere or completely unsafe everywhere.

Belize is a small country, but the water situation can change depending on the location, the source and the system supplying your accommodation.

πŸ’š Backpacker Tip:
When you arrive at a hostel, guesthouse or hotel, simply ask: β€œIs the tap water safe to drink here?” Locals and accommodation owners will usually know exactly what water you should be using.

🌧️ Not All Water In Belize Comes From The Same Place

This is something many visitors do not realise.

The water coming from a tap in one part of Belize may not come from the same type of source as the water coming from a tap somewhere else.

Depending on where you are, water may come from a treated municipal supply, a well, a private system, a water tank or rainwater collection.

Rainwater collection is common in some areas, particularly where there is no connection to a central municipal water supply.

Rainwater can be treated and made safe for drinking, but you should not assume that every tank or collection system is automatically safe to drink from.

Always ask first.

πŸ“ What About Different Parts Of Belize?

The answer can vary depending on where you are travelling.

πŸ™οΈ Towns & Cities

Treated municipal water is available in many towns and cities. Many people drink the tap water, but you should still check with your accommodation if you are unsure.

🌴 Jungle Lodges

Some jungle accommodation may use private wells, tanks or filtration systems. Ask what the drinking water situation is before filling your bottle from the tap.

🏝️ The Cayes

Water systems can vary from island to island and from one property to another. Some accommodation provides filtered or purified drinking water for guests.

🏑 Private Accommodation

If you are staying in a private home, apartment or long-term rental, ask where the water comes from and whether it has been filtered or treated for drinking.

♻️ You Do Not Have To Live From Plastic Bottles

If you decide that you do not want to drink directly from the tap, that does not mean you need to buy a new small plastic bottle every time you are thirsty.

Many hostels, hotels and guesthouses provide filtered or purified drinking water.

Some travellers also carry a reusable bottle and refill it from a trusted filtered water supply.

This can save money and reduce the amount of single-use plastic you use during your trip.

Ask your accommodation if they have a refill station or filtered water available.

πŸŽ’ Backpacker Tip:
Bring a reusable water bottle. It is useful for buses, hikes, beach days and long travel days, and you may be able to refill it with filtered water instead of constantly buying new bottles.

🧊 What About Ice In Drinks?

This is another question travellers often ask.

In restaurants, hotels and bars, ice is commonly made using treated or purified water, but if you are unsure about a particular place, simply ask.

You do not need to panic every time you see ice in your drink.

But if you are somewhere remote or you are unsure about the water source, asking is always better than guessing.

The same rule applies to drinking water:

When in doubt, ask the people who live there.

πŸͺ₯ What About Brushing Your Teeth?

If you are staying somewhere and are unsure about the tap water, you can always use filtered or bottled water for brushing your teeth as well.

Many travellers use tap water for brushing their teeth without any issue, particularly in places with treated municipal water.

But if your accommodation specifically tells you not to drink the tap water, follow their advice.

Your accommodation should know the water system they are using better than a random travel blog written from another country.

πŸ’§ Don’t Panic. Just Ask.

You do not need to arrive in Belize terrified of drinking anything that comes out of a tap.

You also should not assume that every water source in the country is exactly the same.

The smartest thing you can do is find out where you are, ask the people who live there and use filtered or bottled water if you are unsure.
